Cda-Projects Grant for Artistic Research and Production

Cda-Projects Grant is offering a 10,000 Euro grant to support the production of an artistic research project.

The grant aims at supporting and opening up discussions on artistic research to an expanded network through an open call. It encourages speculative approaches to how discourse is staged and how knowledge is produced, rethought and interwoven across disciplines. Without any limitations on the content, the proposed inquiries are expected to suggest new forms and methodologies by reflecting on contexts and conditions of the knowledge produced.


Cda-Projects Grant will also support a publication after the completion of the project that brings together discussions on the artistic research undertaken, including the questions raised, speculative analysis and the final outcome. The publication will be prepared by Cda-Projects Grant in cooperation with the grant recipient.


Authors (includes artists, curators, writers, thinkers etc…) of any nationality, regardless of age, can propose projects to be carried out individually or collectively.
Applicants can submit an artistic research project that is currently in the production stage or one that is scheduled to be completed during the six‐month period following the date of selection.


All the submitted documents should be in English and in PDF format. Applications that are not sent in the specified format will not be considered.

The Selection Committee

The invited selection committee members are Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, Emily Jacir and Chus Martinez. İz Öztat will take part in the selection committee as Cda-Projects Grant Director.
Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy is the curator of contemporary art at Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. In 2009-2010, she was director of Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. Before then, she worked as curator at Art in General and earlier at Americas Society, both of these nonprofit arts organizations in New York City. Exhibitions she has curated independently include: “Autopsia de lo invisible” at MALBA in Buenos Aires, Argentina; “Archaeology of Longing” at Kadist Art Foundation in Paris, France, where she was in residence for part of 2008; and together with Raimundas Malasauskas and Alexis Vaillant, the IX Baltic Triennial “Black Market Worlds” (a.k.a. BMW). Sofía writes regularly for exhibition catalogues and art magazines, as well as in her blog:

Emily Jacir’s work spans a diverse range of media and strategies including film, photography, social interventions, installation, performance, video, writing and sound. Jacir has shown extensively throughout Europe, the Americas and the Middle East since 1994. Solo exhibitions include the Beirut Art Center (2010), Guggenheim Museum, New York (2009), and Kunstmuseum, St. Gallen (2008). Jacir participated in dOCUMENTA (13)  (2012); the 51st (2005), 52nd (2007), and 53rd (2009) Biennale di Venezia; 15th Biennale of Sydney (2006); Sharjah Biennial 7 (2005); and the 8th Istanbul Biennial (2003). Awards include a Golden Lion at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007); a Prince Claus Award from the Prince Claus Fund in The Hague (2007); the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum (2008); and the Alpert Award (2011) from the Herb Alpert Foundation. In 2003, belongings was published by O.K Books, a monograph on a selection of Jacir’s work from 1998 – 2003. Her second monograph (2008) was published by Verlag Fur Moderne Kunst Nurnberg. She is a professor and on the Academic Board at the International Academy of Art Palestine (2006–2013). Jacir led the first year of the Home Workspace Academy in Beirut and created the curriculum and programming for 2011-2012. In 2012 Jacir also served on the 2012 Berlinale Shorts International Jury. She currently lives around the Mediterranean.

Born in Ponteceso (La Coruña), Spain, Chus Martínez has a background in philosophy and art history. She is dOCUMENTA (13) Head of Department, and Member of Core Agent Group. Previously she was Chief Curator at MACBA, Barcelona (2008 to 2010), Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein (2005–08) and Artistic Director of Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (2002–05). For the 50th Biennale di Venezia (2005), Martínez curated the National Pavilion of Cyprus, and in 2010 served as a Curatorial Advisor for the 29th Bienal de São Paulo.

Martínez has produced numerous international exhibitions including, Sergio Prego’s After Trisha Brown, Mark Lewis’ Some Near Distance, and the group show The Invisible Insurrection of a Million Minds at Sala Rekalde. During her tenure as Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein she curated solo exhibitions of Esra Ersen, Wilhelm Sasnal, and Manon de Boer, among others; and a series of stand out group exhibitions including Pensee Sauvage and The Great Game To Come. Additionally, during this period at the Kunstverein she organized the conference When Kittens Become Cats and helped carry out the transformation of a portion of the exhibition space into the Deutsche Börse Residency Program for international artists, curators, and art mediators.

While at MACBA Martínez curated the Thomas Bayrle retrospective, an Otolith Group monographic show, and an exhibition devoted to television, Are you ready for TV?. She produced several projects with Armando Andrade Tudela, Pep Duran, and Natascha Sadr Haghighian, as well as a series of projects with more performative characteristics, including The Malady of Writing and The Uncertainty Principle. In 2008 Martínez was the curator of the Deimantas Narkevicius retrospective exhibition, La vida unánime (The Unanimous Life) at the Museo de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, which traveled to the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Kunsthalle Bern, The Hessel Museum of Art at The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Vilnius.

Martínez lectures and writes regularly including numerous catalogue texts and critical essays, and is a regular contributor to Artforum among other international journals.

İz Öztat is an artist based in Istanbul. She is currently a candidate for PhD in Art Practice at Yıldız Technical University, İstanbul. She lectured at Kadir Has University between 2009 – 2011. In 2008, she co-founded cura bodrum residency in Muğla  as an investigation into self-organization and non-institutional support mechanisms. Her work has been included in Second Exhibition, Arter (2010) and When Ideas Become Crime (2010) at Depo, İstanbul. Her solo shows are İZ at Maçka Sanat Galerisi, İstanbul (2012), READ/ OKU at PiST (2008), Istanbul, Love It or Leave It (2005), Ohio and Nothing Disappears Without a Trace (2004), Ohio.

Assessment Criteria

Project selection will be made after assessing the proposals considering the following criteria:

- Ability to speculate on what knowledge is and suggest new forms of knowledge production.
- Ability to articulate an innovative methodology and form in relation to the content.
- Project feasibility according to the complementary documents provided, as well as the documentation for the proposed project.
- A dynamic working methodology which considers artistic practice from multiple viewpoints including theoretical, conceptual, aesthetic and beyond.
- A willingness to take risks and try completely new and unfamiliar working methodologies.


Deadline for applications: November 20, 2012
Announcement of the results: January 10, 2013
Completion of the project: July 30, 2013
Book launch: December 31, 2013

Benefits / Obligations

- 10,000 Euros will be paid in three installments. The first payment of 3000 Euros will be made in January 2013. The grantee is obliged to provide a progress report on March 30th, 2013. If the report demonstrates adequate development of the project, second installment of the payment will be made as 3000 Euros. The final payment of 4000 Euros will be made, when the project is completed and submitted.
- The grantee is responsible for producing the outcome of the artistic research project that is outlined in the proposal.
- All the material produced with the grant remains the property of the author(s).
- The grantee is responsible for providing Cda-Projects Grant with material and content that was produced during the research process for a publication to be produced by Cda-Projects Grant in cooperation with the grantee.
- When the resulting project is exhibited, the following should be mentioned:
- This project has been produced with the support of Cda-Projects Grant for Artistic Research and Production 2012.
- All the documents generated should be given to Cda-Projects Grant for archival purposes.
- All the legal responsibility of the content in the publication belongs to the author(s).

Selected person or collective undertake(s):

- To develop the project between January 1st – June 30th 2013. If not, they shall decline the grant and refund the amount received.
- To own the intellectual property rights to the project and guarantee that the work is unpublished and original. If not, they shall decline the grant, refund the amount received and pay an atonement.
- Participation in this grant means full acceptance of the rules regulating it. Failure to comply with any of the obligations contained herein or in the grant award shall result in its immediate cancellation, irrespective of any responsibility that may be incurred.
